News on upcoming news...

It's been too long since I've laid a post down here, which is totally unfair seeings how we have such great titles in the works. Over the next several days I'll be posting information in greater details, but for now I'd just like to drop a few words highlighting some of what's coming up...

First, now released from the printer, is the third book in The Palik Series from BearManor Fiction and the North American Jules Verne Society: Mr. Chimp and Other Plays. This is a fascinating collection which provide some real insights into Verne as a younger writer and what he would become. I'll write more on this anon... just know that it's rolled off the presses and we'll have ordering available through our website and through Amazon tres soon.

Also coming soon is a short fiction collection by Hollywood writer Michael B. Druxman. Dracula Meets Jack the Ripper, and Other Revisionist Histories is currently in production. This collection of amusing stories, some quite slapstick in spots, calls back to such classic stylings as Abbot & Costello Meet the Wolfman, and even, dare I suggest it, Bill and Ted. Don't believe me? Well check back later for even more details as this book nears completion.

Speaking of funny...how about Red Skelton? Wes Gehring offers up I, Red Skelton: Exit Laughing… or, A Man, His Movies, and Sometimes His Monkeys, an authorized, fictionalized biography of Red Skelton. Confused? So was I at first, but the payoff is pretty darn good. This is also currently in production and I'll give up some more details as they become available.

Big on promises, short on detail? Well, yeah. This is a "catch up" post. Over the weekend I'll go into greater detail on each new title, and on other titles coming up.

Shipwrecked Family by Jules Verne!

Just published … with the assistance of the North American Jules Verne Society, the first English translation of the author’s Shipwrecked Family: Marooned with Uncle Robinson. Verne’s publisher told him to rewrite it, and that became the classic, Mysterious Island, where Captain Nemo made his last appearance. However, as revealed by this completely different version, Ray Harryhausen’s movie may have been closer to Verne’s original intentions, for there is evidence of strange experiments on the animals of the island.

We're sending off to the printer the finals for Odette, a Goose of Toulouse: a Celebration of Life and Music by Earl Hamner and Don Sipes. You may recognize Earl Hamner as the creator of the celebrated television show, The Waltons, and scribe for several fine episodes of The Twilight Zone. Don Sipes was a Hollywood writer and producer who also ran, at different points of his career, Universal Television, MGM, United Artists, and Lorimar Pictures.

Together they've penned this charming story of a singing goose and her adventures in and around Toulouse, France along with a whole host of other animal friends. Illustrated by the 6th Grade students at Wallins Elementary and Junior High School in Wallins Creek, Kentucky, this is a wonderful book not just for children, but for adults who are young at heart.

Marching Forward

March is off to a great start with the release of the first book in The Palik Series, The Marriage of a Marquis by Jules Verne, never-before translated into English courtesy of the good folks from the North American Jules Verne Society. The second book in the series, Shipwrecked Family, is heading off to the printer while the third book, Mr. Chimp and Other Plays is currently being proofed. Stay tuned for more information on this great series of books as news develops.

Also recently released was Bob Chinn's Flesh of the Lotus, a Johnny Wadd novel. Jill Nelson, co-author of John Holmes: a Life Measured In Inches had this to say:

I first became acquainted with former adult film director, Bob Chinn, a few years ago, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that he had embarked upon adapting several of the Johnny Wadd films into a novel format. Generally, the reverse scenario is the case, so this is an unusual undertaking, but one that is remarkably satisfying. Johnny Wadd, the primary, promiscuous character (and studly detective) showcased in Flesh of the Lotus, is reminiscent of the blue screen anti-hero made famous by the legendary John Holmes, but with new and improved depth. Without straying too far from the authenticity of the setting and atmosphere of the original film noir experience, Chinn has managed to bring about a maturation of the womanizing investigator, by integrating a contemporary conscience into the mix -- via the introduction of an old cop friend of Johnny's. The two pals attempt to untangle the clues surrounding the murder of a former girlfriend of Wadd's, while Johnny blows off steam by bedding some beautiful and mysterious women - old habits die hard. Chinn's pulp style of writing is thoroughly enjoyable, as are the humourous, dry-witted exchanges between the two weathered veterans. The plot contains many unexpected zig zags until reaching a climactic end, as the story effortlessly engrosses the reader. Chinn has been quoted as saying that he sometimes feels he unleashed a monster when he crafted private dick Johnny Wadd on the back of an envelope in 1970. Considering that this published work is more than 40 years after the fact, is a testament to Mr. Chinn's initial instincts. He should be proud of what he created, and very pleased with his first literary effort.
